Workshop description

The Kilgo Scope & Sequence workshops support school districts and campuses in developing and implementing dynamic curriculum plans, and identifying a specific sequence in which to teach the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Student Expectations (SEs). These sessions provide an organized curriculum framework for teaching and assessing the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) at all grade levels, not just the tested grade levels, and include all of the components critical for improving student achievement equitably for all students, grades K-12.

By participating in the Kilgo Scope & Sequence workshops school districts will be preparing teachers and administrators to make an effective and successful transition to the Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) by following the Kilgo Research Model for teaching the curriculum standards to the depth and complexity of TAKS in an organized scope and sequence curriculum framework.  The STAAR will be the new standards-based assessment for Texas for grades 3-8 and for all high school end-of-course (EOC) assessments beginning in the 2011-2012 school year.  The 2010 Kilgo Scope and Sequence notebooks and workshops will include Margaret Kilgo’s new research on the alignment between the TEKS/SE and the Texas College Readiness Standards for ELAR and Mathematics, a critical component of the new 2013 Texas Accountability Program.

The 2010 Scope & Sequence workshops in science, mathematics, language arts/reading, and social studies, grades K-12, will include:

  • an overview of the latest Kilgo research on the Texas curriculum standards, the TEKS/SEs, and the TAKS, including new research on alignment between the Texas College Readiness Standards and the TEKS/SEs;

  • Scope and Sequence charts developed by Margaret Kilgo identifying a specific sequence in which to teach the TEKS/SEs based on statewide TAKS data trends (charts provided in hard copy and on CD in an Excel format);

  • procedures for customizing the Kilgo Scope and Sequence charts in the development and implementation of  a local school district curriculum plan and adding local district resources; and

  • process for developing and organizing the district and/or campus assessment plan, including how to write questions 100% aligned with the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of TAKS.

The 2010 Scope and Sequence workshop for English Language Arts Reading (ELAR) will include Scope and Sequence Charts, K-12, with the revised ELAR TEKS/SEs scheduled for the second year of full implementation in the 2010-2011 school year.

The ELAR Scope and Sequence will include:

  • Margaret Kilgo's research outlining a comparison between the 1997 original and the new, revised 2009 ELAR TEKS/SEs to support teachers, principals, and curriculum administrators in continuing the transition from the old to the new 2009 ELAR TEKS/SEs;

  • Margaret Kilgo's research with reading comprehension question stems aligned with the new 2009 ELAR TEKS/SEs, grades K-12, and reading comprehension question stems aligned with the 1997 original ELA TEKS/SEs, grades 3-11 that represent skills in the new 2009 TEKS/SEs to be utilized for the 2011 TAKS; and

  • NEW! Margaret Kilgo's new research on alignment between the Texas College Readiness Standards and the 2009 ELAR TEKS/SEs.

The 2010 Scope and Sequence workshop for Science will include all new Scope and Sequence Charts, grades K-12, with the new, revised Science TEKS/SEs scheduled for full implementation in the 2010-2011 school year.

The Science Scope and Sequence will include:

  • the comparison between the 1997 original and the 2010 new, revised Science TEKS/SEs;

  • the comparison between the 1997 Science TEKS/SEs identified as tested on TAKS with the 2010 TEKS/SEs for the 2011 TAKS based on the Kilgo Research Model for teaching the TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of TAKS; and

Components of Model Scope & Sequence Charts

  • Sequence for pacing instruction of the TEKS/SEs in the model Scope & Sequence charts based on current state student achievement data trends and Kilgo research on the relationship between the TEKS/SEs and TAKS.

  • Coding of “high stakes” objectives, TEKS/SEs tested on TAKS and TAKS-M.

  • Coding alignment of the SAT in reading and mathematics.

  • Margaret Kilgo's new research on alignment between the Texas College Readiness Standards and the TEKS/SEs in Science, Mathematics, Reading and Writing, and Social Studies, grades K-12.

  • Vertical alignment for reading and writing, grades K-12, so skills can be introduced at earlier grade levels and developed to mastery prior to testing on TAKS.

  • Vertical alignment for mathematics, K-12, so skills and concepts can be introduced at earlier grade levels and developed to mastery prior to testing on TAKS.

  • Vertical alignment for science, grades 1-8, so skills and concepts can be introduced at earlier grade levels.

  • Vertical alignment for the new, revised ELAR TEKS/SE, K-12, in reading comprehension so all thinking skills are introduced in a developmental sequence and developed to mastery prior to testing on TAKS across all TEKS strands and genres.  The vertical alignment in the ELAR Scope and Sequence charts is based on Margaret Kilgo’s current and new research on the relationship between the reading comprehension curriculum standards and the state standardized assessment and statewide Reading TAKS data trends.

    Model Scope & Sequence charts are provided in hard copy and on CD in an Excel format.

Scope & Sequence Workshop Training Components

1.   Developing a dynamic school district curriculum plan

  • Purposes of Scope & Sequence Curriculum Plans

  • How to make data-driven decisions based on local campus and district student achievement data in the development and revision of district and/or campus scope & sequence charts

    • Based on 2008, 2009, and 2010 TAKS data by student expectation

 2.  Adding aligned resources to the scope & sequence charts

  • How to evaluate resources for 100% alignment with TEKS/SEs and TAKS

  • How to extend lessons based on TEKS/SEs to the depth and complexity of TAKS without teaching to the test

3.  Customizing the Kilgo Scope and Sequence Charts into a unique School District and/or Campus Level Curriculum Plan

  • How to apply the research and process developed by Margaret Kilgo in the development of new local school district and/or campus curriculum plan based on needs and data trends

  • How to compare current school district and/or campus scope and sequence charts with the model Kilgo scope and sequence charts provided in the workshops and revise existing district/campus charts by using the strategies and processes presented in the workshops.

4.  Implementing Scope & Sequence charts at the district and campus levels

  • How to remediate through the grade level TEKS/SEs instead of outside of the grade level TEKS/SEs using the district/campus scope and sequence charts

  • Professional development training materials for effective implementation of district scope & sequence charts (includes take-home training packet)

5.  Developing and Organizing the District and Campus Assessment Program Based on Scope and Sequence Charts

  • How to design a district and/or campus assessment plan including specific recommendations for the scheduling of benchmark assessments unique to each subject area;

  • How to align district and/or campus assessments with the TEKS/SE to the depth/complexity of TAKS; and

  • Process for writing questions 100% aligned with the TEKS/SE to the depth/complexity of TAKS.
