Workshop description
Margaret Kilgo
presents new in-depth research on the relationship between the Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Student Expectations (SE) and the
Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) in K-12 reading, math, science
and social studies. Participants are involved in an innovative process that
promotes student success on the TAKS by effectively implementing the TEKS/SE
with a focus on higher standards in classroom instruction and assessment through
a district-wide curriculum and assessment plan.
The critical
components of a campus and/or district plan include:
-
Data-driven
decisions – In-depth models based on specific
TEKS/SE alignment
-
Using data-driven decision
models for the instruction and assessment programs, K-12, in language
arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies based on the
assessment history of student performance on the 2003 through 2008 TAKS and determining strengths and weaknesses by TEKS/SE;
and
-
Developing an understanding of
the most significant errors students make on the TAKS and why students
make these errors based on new data research.
-
Instructional strategies and models
-
Implementing specific strategies and models through levels of questions
for teaching the higher-level thinking skills, concepts, and content
knowledge embedded in the TEKS/SE to the depth and complexity of TAKS;
and
-
Using
assessment models focused on the TEKS/SE to the depth and complexity of
TAKS so students’ grades are accurate predictors of achievement scores
-
Scope and
Sequence
-
Implementing calendar/pacing charts to
be certain all students have
an opportunity to be taught the tested curriculum before the state
assessment.
-
Using data-driven decisions to
spiral and re-teach specific TEKS/SE
-
Focused
Professional Development
-
Providing
a model for educators to research and study the TEKS/SE from the
viewpoint of the TAKS to develop a deep understanding of the alignment
between the TEKS/SE and TAKS with a focus on teaching and assessing the
state curriculum, not teaching to the test; and
-
Organizing professional development around data-driven decisions to
focus study on the lowest scoring TEKS/SE
-
Monitoring
to Ensure Outstanding Student Performance
-
Following
a specific monitoring plan for effective implementation of the TEKS/SE
and alignment with the TAKS
-
Monitoring the ongoing implementation of the strategies and research
presented in this workshop.
